Trek Overview

The Mardi Himal Trek is a hidden gem in the Annapurna region that offers an incredible Himalayan experience without the crowds found on more popular routes. This 7-day journey takes you to the base of the distinctively shaped Machapuchare (Fishtail) mountain, providing some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in Nepal.

Starting from Pokhara, your adventure begins in the village of Kande, from where you'll trek through enchanting rhododendron forests that burst into brilliant colors during spring. As you ascend, the landscape gradually transforms from lush woodland to open ridges and alpine terrain, offering increasingly breathtaking views of the Annapurna range.

One of the most remarkable aspects of this trek is how close you'll get to Machapuchare, the sacred "Fishtail Mountain" that has never been officially climbed. From High Camp and Mardi Himal Base Camp, you'll witness this majestic peak towering above you, alongside stunning views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Mardi Himal itself.

Throughout the journey, you'll stay in comfortable tea houses in small settlements and enjoy hearty meals prepared with locally sourced ingredients. You'll also pass through traditional villages where you can experience authentic local culture, relatively untouched by tourism. The trek culminates at Mardi Himal Base Camp at 4,500m, where the panoramic mountain views will leave you speechless, before returning via a different route to complete a memorable circuit.

Your Mardi Himal adventure begins with your arrival in Pokhara, Nepal's beautiful lakeside city. You can fly directly from Kathmandu (a 25-minute flight) or take a tourist bus (a 6-7 hour journey) through Nepal's scenic countryside. After checking into your hotel, you'll have free time to explore Pokhara's lakeside area, with its stunning views of the Annapurna range reflected in Phewa Lake. In the evening, we'll have a welcome dinner and briefing about the trek with our experienced guide.

From here, we begin our ascent through villages and terraced farmlands to Australian Camp, which offers spectacular views of the Annapurna range. After lunch, we continue trekking through beautiful rhododendron and oak forests to reach Forest Camp (also known as Kokar), where we'll spend our first night in a tea house. The tranquil forest setting provides a peaceful introduction to the Himalayan wilderness.

Day 3: Forest Camp to Low Camp (2,970m)

Today's trek continues through enchanting rhododendron forests, which bloom with brilliant red and pink flowers during spring (March-April). As we gain altitude, the dense forest gradually thins out, offering glimpses of the magnificent mountains ahead. The trail climbs steadily to Low Camp, where we'll be rewarded with our first clear views of Machapuchare (Fishtail Mountain) and the Annapurna range. The sunset views from Low Camp are particularly spectacular, with the golden light illuminating the snow-capped peaks.

The landscape transforms dramatically today, with the dense forests giving way to rugged terrain with dwarf rhododendron bushes and open ridges. The trail follows the ridge with magnificent views of Machapuchare getting closer with each step. High Camp offers breathtaking panoramas of the entire Annapurna range, including Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and of course, the iconic Machapuchare standing majestically before you. We'll arrive at High Camp with time to rest and soak in the incredible mountain scenery.

The pre-dawn trek along the narrow ridge offers a surreal experience as the first light begins to illuminate the mountain peaks. Upon reaching the viewpoint, you'll be rewarded with one of the most spectacular mountain panoramas in Nepal. Machapuchare appears so close you could almost touch it, while the entire Annapurna range stretches before you in its full glory. After spending time taking photos and soaking in the views, we'll return to High Camp for breakfast and rest in the afternoon, or begin our descent to Middle Camp depending on the group's preference.

This alternative return path creates a loop, allowing us to experience new landscapes and villages. The trail descends steeply through rhododendron forests and terraced farmlands, offering beautiful views of the Modi Khola valley below. Sidhing is a traditional Gurung village rarely visited by trekkers, providing an authentic glimpse into rural Nepali life. The tea houses here are more basic but very welcoming, and you'll enjoy home-cooked meals prepared with locally grown ingredients.

Upon returning to Pokhara, you'll check into your hotel and have the rest of the day free to relax, perhaps enjoying a massage to soothe tired muscles or shopping for souvenirs. In the evening, we'll celebrate our successful trek with a farewell dinner featuring traditional Nepali cuisine and cultural performances.

Walking Duration: 3-4 hours
Accommodation: Hotel in Pokhara
Meals: B, L, Farewell Dinner

Best Time to Trek

Spring Season (March to May)

Spring is one of the best times for the Mardi Himal Trek, with moderate temperatures and spectacular rhododendron blooms that transform the forests into a riot of colors.

  • Vibrant rhododendron forests in full bloom (especially in April)
  • Clear mountain views in the morning hours
  • Pleasant temperatures (daytime: 10-20°C, night: 0-10°C)
  • Occasional afternoon clouds and possibility of rain in late May

Autumn Season (September to November)

Autumn offers the most stable weather conditions and clearest skies, making it ideal for the Mardi Himal Trek with its focus on mountain views.

  • Exceptional mountain visibility with crystal-clear views
  • Stable, dry weather with minimal precipitation
  • Comfortable temperatures (daytime: 12-18°C, night: 0-8°C)
  • Slightly more trekkers, though still far less crowded than other treks

Winter (December to February): Winter trekking is possible on the Mardi Himal route, but temperatures can drop significantly at higher elevations, with occasional snow at High Camp and Base Camp. Clear days offer spectacular views, but be prepared for very cold nights (below freezing at high camps) and potential weather-related challenges.

Monsoon (June to August): The monsoon season brings heavy rainfall, making trails slippery and often obscuring mountain views with clouds. While the landscapes are lush and green, we generally don't recommend the Mardi Himal Trek during this period due to practical challenges and limited visibility of the mountains that are the highlight of this trek.

Nepal Sunshine Recommendation: For the optimal Mardi Himal experience, we recommend trekking in October-November for the most reliable mountain views, or March-April to combine good visibility with the spectacular rhododendron blooms.

Difficulty Level and Fitness Requirements

Trek Grade: Moderate

The Mardi Himal Trek is rated as moderate in difficulty. It involves daily walking for 4-7 hours with some steep ascents and descents, but follows well-maintained trails throughout. The maximum altitude reached (4,500m at Mardi Himal Base Camp) is high enough to feel the effects of altitude but is generally manageable with proper acclimatization built into the itinerary.

Trail Conditions

The trek features a variety of terrain:

  • Well-maintained forest trails in the lower sections
  • Stone steps and dirt paths through villages and farmland
  • Ridge walking with some exposed sections (not technical but requiring attention)
  • Some steeper sections, especially approaching High Camp
  • Rocky terrain above the tree line toward Base Camp

Fitness Requirements

To enjoy this trek comfortably, you should:

  • Be able to walk for 5-7 hours per day over multiple consecutive days
  • Have reasonable cardiovascular fitness
  • Be comfortable with uphill walking and some steep sections
  • Have some prior hiking experience (though not necessarily at high altitude)
  • Be prepared for early morning starts, particularly on the Base Camp day

Preparation Tips

To prepare for your Mardi Himal Trek:

  • Begin a regular cardio exercise routine at least 4-6 weeks before your trek
  • Include hill walking or stair climbing in your training
  • Break in your hiking boots thoroughly before the trek
  • Practice walking with a light daypack (3-5kg)
  • If possible, spend some time at moderate altitudes before the trek

Nepal Sunshine Tip: While the Mardi Himal Trek is less crowded than some other popular routes, it does involve some challenging sections, particularly the final ascent to Base Camp. Trekking poles are highly recommended, especially for the steep descents. Our experienced guides will set an appropriate pace to ensure everyone can enjoy the journey safely.
